Combating Spam: Take Control of Your Inbox

By Aaron Beck Brunk

Spam is more than just a nuisance; it’s a security risk that clutters your inbox and wastes your time. While most email services automatically filter junk mail for you, taking a few simple steps can give you more control and ensure you’re only seeing the messages you want.

Marking Spam and Un-Spamming Legitimate Emails

Most email platforms make it easy to manage your junk mail. If a message is a legitimate newsletter you no longer want, the best first step is to unsubscribe. However, for true spam, you can simply mark it as such. This not only moves it to your junk folder but also helps train the spam filter to recognize similar messages in the future.

Conversely, if a genuine email accidentally ends up in your junk folder, you can quickly mark it as “Not Spam” to move it back to your inbox and improve future filtering accuracy.

Customizing Your Spam Filter

For an even more tailored approach, you can manually configure your spam filter settings. This typically allows you to create two types of lists:

Block List: Add specific email addresses or entire domains to a block list to ensure any messages from them are always treated as junk.

Allow List: Add trusted email addresses to an allow list to make sure their messages always land in your inbox.

These simple adjustments can significantly reduce the amount of unwanted mail you receive, helping you create a cleaner and more secure email experience.
