As you add more internet connected devices, the amount of bandwidth you need increases.
Use our helpful calculator to determine how much speed you really need

DSL is an internet connection provided over the same copper lines as your telephone service, allowing you to use both the phone and high-speed internet at the same time. You will also need a DSL modem to convert signals sent over the wires to the signal you need to use the internet. Advances in technology in recent years means faster speeds than ever before are capable over DSL, sometimes similar to speeds offered over fiber. The speed available at your location is limited by the distance of your location to the remote or DSLAM in the network.

As fiber internet connections become more readily available throughout our communities, fiber-optic communication is poised to become the new standard in high-speed internet access for residents and businesses. A fiber connection will provide you with access to virtually unlimited streaming capability and faster internet speed, allowing you to enjoy a better experience with entertainment, work and other online activities.

Fiber internet provides Internet access using fiber-optic cable rather than traditional copper cable or satellite signals. Fiber-optic lines consist of hundreds of small strands of glass or plastic cables, each about 1/10th the size of a single human hair. Each strand of fiber cable transmits data using pulses of light that travel at the speed of light.

CVCTX is committed to expanding our fiber to the home throughout the rural communities we serve, where time, cost and availability of resources allow us to do so. We are involved in a multi-year fiber to the home construction and continue to evaluate where to build out our fiber network next.

Different from other connections like DSL or fiber, fixed wireless provides broadband internet access to locations through radio waves – eliminating the need for physical connections over traditional lines.

Service providers will install a receiver at your home or office which communicates with the nearest wireless base station. This offers you access to the internet via radio waves carrying the broadband signal from the receiver to the router in your home or office.

Fixed wireless internet is mainly used in rural areas where setting up the infrastructure for broadband services like DSL is prohibitively expensive. Transporting and burying cables in the ground and getting the necessary permits can be expensive. So it doesn’t make financial sense for service providers to go down this road in less populated areas, where they can’t get enough subscribers on board to justify the total costs.

Fixed Wireless Advantages:

  • Easier set-up. Service does not require physical cables or the hassle of build-out scheduling and timing
  • No data caps. You can download or upload large files (software, updates, large email attachments, etc.), run a VoIP phone system, stream music in your office, or use internet-based applications and databases as much as you need to in order to keep your business running at its best.
  • Download speeds are just as fast as other broadband services. One of the biggest differences between fixed wireless and satellite is the amount of latency, or lag.  This is how long it takes information to be sent or received over your connection.  With a fixed wireless connection, the signal only travels from the antenna to the nearest tower. The shorter distance means that fixed wireless has about the same latency as a cable or DSL connection, and will run just as quickly.

Considerations:

  • Weather can affect strength of signals
  • Line of sight between receiver (on the building) and wireless base station factors into performance
  • Obstructions (trees, buildings, hills) can affect the quality of service

Will I need a pole?

A good quality wireless signal requires us to minimize interference – trees, other buildings, distant hills, etc.

We currently are utilizing 2 different frequency systems. One system can tolerate some obstructions, but you trade off a little performance (speed).  The other frequency system requires near-line-of-sight, so often times we need to get above the trees and other buildings.

Our service technicians will help determine whether or not you will to have a pole installed in order to optimize your internet service experience.

Troubleshooting (Internet)

24-Hour Technical Support 877.452.9035

If you experience problems with your Internet connection, these simple steps may help.

1.)  Power-cycle your DSL modem.

There may be an on/off switch in back of the unit. If not, simply unplug the round power connector behind your DSL modem. Leave it off for a few seconds, then turn it back on.

CRITICAL: Once you turn your DSL modem back on you must wait for up to 5 minutes for it to “wake up” and establish the connection. Not allowing the unit to fully wake up will result in failure of the following steps.

2.)  Power-cycle any routers that may be connected to the DSL modem.

Many subscribers connect wireless routers to our DSL modem. To power-cycle these simply unplug the power connector from behind the unit. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

We have found that routers frequently enter a confused state with AC power fluctuations and need power-cycling frequently. If you find that you are continually performing these steps to repair the Internet connection, simply try power-cycling your router next time. If this fixes your connection you have narrowed the problem down to your router.

3.)  Completely shut down and restart all computers.

Be sure you fully power down and restart the computer. Some people confuse the “Sleep or Hibernate” function as a restart which it is not. If you are in the Windows environment you’ll need to choose Shutdown.

If these steps do not resolve the problem please contact our 24-hour Internet Technical Support line at toll-free (877) 452-9035.

If you experience problems with your Internet connection, these simple steps may help.

1.)  Power-cycle the Subscriber Module (radio) outside.

Please review the image of your power supply that operates the Subscriber Module (SM) outside. To power cycle the SM simply un-plug and re-plug the CAT5 cable connected to the small square box that is located either behind your computer or behind a router. The connector fits snug so be sure to really push when you reconnect it.

CRITICAL: Once your SM is powered on you must wait for up to 5 minutes for it to “wake up” and establish the connection to the tower. Not allowing the unit to fully wake up will result in failure of the following steps.

2.)  If you have a router power-cycle it.

CAUTION– If your router is the Comtrend WR-5887 it should have a sticker on it that says “DO NOT HIT RESET”. Do not press the Reset/WPS button or a technician will need to reset your router. You may still power-cycle your router using the steps below.

Many subscribers connect wireless routers to our equipment. If you do not have a router skip this step.

After waiting 5 minutes for the SM to wake up and establish the Internet connection, power-cycle your router. To do this simply unplug the power connector from behind the unit. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in.
